The NeverEnding journey to Dublin

Last week I learned many new things about Ireland and particularly about Dublin airport. I was visiting my good friend for the weekend and I was supposed to fly back to Brussels on 20th. My fight to Finland was on 23rd. Due to the weather conditions, I got stuck there for additional 6 days...


My flights got cancelled for 4 times, out of which 3 times I was already at the airport, at the gate, waiting for the flight... After the 4th cancelled flight to Brussels, I decided to book direct flights to Finland. So, I was finally in Helsinki on 26th of Dec.


The first two times my flights were cancelled, I was able to take the situation with humor. But after that, the "stress management" became harder and preventing the tears was impossible. Specially when I realized that I'm not going to be home for Christmas...


Well, there's always an upside too. Fortunately I didn't spend the time alone at the airport, but I stayed with a new good friend of mine for the whole time. I even got invited for the Christmas dinner (with salomon specially cooked for me!) and got presents from Joulupukki (Santa Claus). I was very impressed by the warmth and friendliness of the Irish people. 


Even though I spent the Christmas away from my family, it was one of the best Christmases I've ever had. At least one of the most memorable :)

So, during the Christmas holidays I can´t do anything else but to study (or try at least while travelling between Southern Finland and Northern Finland & packing my things for Lappeenranta in February).

I´m bit worried about the workload in the beginning, although happy that the two exams on 10th are touching the same issues (a little bit). I love the Environmental Economics course, but worried at the same time, since it can be rather challenging.. Russian exam is horrifying me, since I´m really not able to produce anything sensible in speaking.. and the teacher speaks quite fast and I don´t understand... I hope I´ll pass.. 
Business Process and Operations course covered a looot of topics and concepts and the exam will be multiple choice (I usually suck in those). So a lot of reading is required to pass that one.. ICT Strategy & Architecture wouldn´t worry me, but it is oral exam and I have never had an oral exam about something else than languages... So, we shall see how that will turn out. 


Friday is my last day of working for the CSR Forest project, so from now on, I´m able to focus more on my Master´s thesis. Looks like a lot of work for the beginning of next year.. and hopefully for the rest as well after the graduation ;)

Joulua odotellessa

Muistaakseni kirjoitin viime syksynä Pietarin erikoisista jouluvaloista, jotka vilkkuivat ja välkkyivät kaikissa sateenkaaren väreissä. No, pettymyksekseni Brysselin jouluvalot menee samaan kategoriaan. Ihan kaikissa mahdollisissa sateenkaaren väreissä valoja ei sentään ole täällä, mutta vilkkuvia diskovaloja kyllä löytyy. 

Siitä on joulutunnelma kaukana. Täällä on vakuuttavampi joulutori kuitenkin kuin Pietarissa, ehkä niiden tunnelmaa on vaikea verrata kun myytävät tuotteet ja naposteltavat ovat niin erilaisia (Venäjällä shaslikia ja olutta, Belgiassa vohveleita ja glögin tapaista kuumaa maustettua viiniä). Mutta tori täällä on suurempi ja kojuissa myydään krääsän lisäksi ihan kunnon tuotteita. 

Tänään vierailin Merimieskirkon joulumyyjäisissä (lähellä Thronen metroasemaa) ja ostin sieltä piparkakku-omena keksejä jos niistä saisi joulutunnelman. Sain vierailtani glögiä ja piparkakkuja jo aikaisemmin, eli joulufiilis on sikäli pelastettu. Kaipaan kyllä niitä hyvällä ja maltillisella maulla koristeltuja joulukatuja Suomessa. No, kohta olen jo siellä...

Past weeks

I have been down with a cold for the past few weeks, fortunately getting better now. Belgium is surprisingly cold, specially indoors as the apartments aren´t very well isolated.

We had a Global Village event, where we promoted our home countries (Finland!) and our home Universities (LUT!). To our surprise at our stand, there was also marketing material for Åbo Akademi (the Swedish University in Turku) and Helsinki University. It would have been nice to know beforehand, so that we could have found out some information about those two universities. But we didn´t, so we were only able to tell people about the two cities and our university. I´m always happy to promote Turku which I consider to be my home city, since it is the closest city to my home village. (And BTW, name Turku is not at all related to Turkey. Name of Turku comes from a word "tori" which means a marketplace) 

We got finally our exam schedule for January too. It looks quite ok, except the 10th of Jan. when I have two exams in a row.. It´s going to be a tough day :o

Wellwell, I guess I´ll just continue with the group works now..   

Worries..

I´m so worried about my MITIM colleagues in South Korea... Hope everything will be ok and you´re safe there!

Splitting Country

The discussion about splitting Belgium in two, Flanders and Wallonia has been going on for quite some time.  Here´s latest discussion about the issue.

I think it would be sad to split Belgium up... What would happen then? Would Flanders join Netherlands (doubtful) and Wallonia France? Or would they both be independent countries? What about the German-speaking people? And where Brussels would locate in that case (it is located in Flanders, but majority speaks French)? Would there be Belgium anymore?

Oh no, it´s too sad to think even... I wish those nationalists would be able to embrace diversity and find a solution that wouldn´t need a nasty divorce... 

Floods

As I wrote in the previous posting, the autumn is here.. It´s been raining quite a lot so there are a lot of floods (although I haven´t seen in Brussels yet). Well, other parts of Belgium are fighting against the floods, unfortunately it has caused already death of two persons.


It´s not too cold yet (if comparing to Finland) but the wind is quite something.. I don´t know if it´s because of the moist and coldish weather or have I been neglecting my sports and good diet too much, but I have annoying flue right now. I really can´t afford to be sick now...

Autumn in Belgium

It´s autumn here for sure.. It´s been raining now almost all the time for past week. I don´t really mind the rain, I just miss my pink Nokia Hai rubber boots! 

MITIMs back in Finland and Russia had their research seminar in St.Petersburg. We exchange students were also asked to write the report and presentation slides for today. In addition, we need to peer review someone else´s work and write 2 pages report about that. Hmm, I actually feel lonely now. I miss the group spirit and the sharing of ideas.. And of course I know that the guys are having great time in St.Pete at the moment... ;)

Comparing

I notice that time to time I compare my experiences from St.Petersburg to the experiences in Belgium. That is kind of weird, since they literally are to different worlds in many ways. Why to compare? 

...

Well, it comes automatically... I guess it is human nature to compare life to the past and make conclusions whether this is better or worse. But Russia and Belgium are different - or are they really? 

The political scene is mysterious in both countries (at least the unprofessional, not deeply interested point view of mine is this). In Belgium the system is highly bureaucratic and complex apparently due to the three languages (Dutch, French and German). There is provincial and local governments, regional and community governments (for different languages)  and finally the federal government. And they have a king who has the final say in things. Well, I checked all this information from Wikipedia and I´ve talked with my Belgium friends about this but still it´s not quite clear.. 

In Russia the political system is also quite mysterious, but that´s because I´m not sure who is really pulling the strings in that country and is it really democracy there.. Well, I have to be honest, I haven´t looked into the system so deeply. But in conclusion, the amount of bureaucracy is amazing in both countries, maybe that is the curtain of mystery there... 

It´s both beautiful and ugly at the same time in the two countries. Brussels is weird city, but I like it. The architecture is quite inconsistent and it´s a bit dirty to what I´m used to (and my expectations towards the capital of EU). But the parks and the art deco -styled houses are absolutely beautiful. St.Petersburg is absolutely beautiful except the Soviet styled buildings, and it is extraordinary how something so different and adventurous is so close to Finland (again, I had different expectations to ex-Soviet city). Yes, it was also a bit dirty and ugly there but still I liked the city a lot.

In both countries I should watch my back when walking alone, specially during the evening/night. Oh, and the stability of the internet access is not guaranteed in neither of the countries, or even sometimes the availability of warm water. I´m not sure actually are these issues only guaranteed in the Scandinavian countries or have I just been lucky for the first years of my life.

The food... mmm, the food... It is different in both countries, but it is so good in both countries. In Russia, I loved the soups and the pies with a cup of tea or a glass of sparkling wine. In Belgium, it is the sweet stuff, waffles, chocolate and cherry beer... 

Well, the differences.. Firstly, language of course, due to EU and NATO offices, there are a lot of foreigners working here who don´t speak French or Dutch, so almost everywhere you´ll get customer service in English. In Russia, you need to speak Russian. 

Belgium is more multicultural than Russia (although in Russia there are many nationalities and "clans" inside that huge country, so maybe this issue can be debated). The shops are open longer in Russia (which is nice), although as a similar thing I´d say that the variation of shops (specially clothing) is so much better in both countries than in Finland.

In Russia, I had my very own, close MITIM group (which I always miss). Here in Belgium I don´t have constant same group to go to the lectures with, but still I´ve met really good new friends. And I´ve had so great time with an old friend of mine, E.  

In conclusion, there are obvious differences and there are unexpected similarities, but in both places I´ve felt at home (or I still feel)... Both cities will always have a special place in my heart.

Life is good

I really like it here in Belgium, I haven´t yet had this "must go back home" -feeling that usually comes in the first months (I´ve heard).

Although, today I couldn´t help missing my MITIM colleagues.. Main reason for missing them is the fact that it is my birthday today.. Last year in St.Petersburg my colleagues arranged me the surprise of a lifetime - a ride with pink limousine with good friends and plenty of Russian sparkling wine. After the ride the night ended with dinner & dancing. That was spectacular evening that I will never forget!!

 Love & miss you guys, hope you´re doing good where ever you are right now!

Finally L.A.

I mean Learning Agreement, not Los Angeles.. ;)

I had to change quite many of my original courses due to overlapping in my schedule. The overlapping was because I had accidentally taken my courses from the same "module" (which was not explained anywhere in the course catalog - and I wasn´t the only one with the same problem), but fortunately I found good, more interesting courses to take. 

The biggest problem of waiting for the L.A to arrive is the fact that I´m not able to access the course material in HUBwise (kind of like Noppa in LUT). I got some materials from some other students in the classes, but not all...

Finally, yesterday I received the signed final Learning Agreement from LUT (it´s good to be prepared for delays and just take it easy meanwhile) and I took it to the coordinator today. And, dadaaa, the same day, I got the courses to my schedule! Great!

So now my schedule looks like this:

Last week I had my first French class... in French... Fortunately English was quite acceptable in Paris :)

After the first week at the University

As I mentioned in my previous text, I have quite a lot of overlapping with my courses.Happily I found interesting replacements, and now my schedule starts to look quite nice. It also seems that the courses won´t require too much time consuming group work, because the cases are done during the lectures at the university. I had yesterday the first Russian lecture (Russian culture & language) and I felt like I need to study a lot more words in order to manage that one. But a classmate said that they also have some difficulties in understanding the laughing, singing colorful Russian teacher. I think she made the afternoon quite interesting :)

So far the lectures I´ve had have been good, the professors speak fluently English and don´t use too much Dutch (except the Russian teacher). Most interesting course so far is the Environmental Economics, I really look forward the lectures every Monday evening.

I decided to add also voluntary French course (25 €) in the schedule. I figured that since I´m in a French speaking country for the next 5 months, I might as well try to learn the language. It´s a great opportunity I think.

Ok, now back to studies...

Welcome day @ HUB

Eilen HUB järjesti tervetuloa tilaisuuden kaikille n. 130 vaihtarille. Aamupäivän osuus oli henkilökunnan ja opiskelijayhdistyksen esittelyjä ja infoa käytännön asioista. Luentojen jälkeen hajaannuimme pienempiin ryhmiin, joilla lähdimme kiertämään kaupunkia buddyn kanssa. Tarkoituksena oli samalla suorittaa erilaisia tehtäviä (esim. ottaa selvää paljonko leffalippu maksaa) ja ottaa kuvia kertakäyttökameralla matkan varrelta. Aluksi ryhmään kuului me kolme suomalaista, kaksi hollantilaista ja useampi espanjalainen. Luonnollisesti espanjalaiset matkan varrella löysivät toisia espanjalaisia joiden kanssa päättivät jatkaa matkaa. 

No, me saimme tehtävät suoritettua nopeasti espanjalaisten vaihdettua porukkaa ja päätimme kierroksen yliopiston omaan pubiin(!). Siellä muuten vadelmaolut maksaa 1,70 €...

Illalla ohjelma jatkui perinteisillä speed-dating tyylisillä tutustumisleikeillä. Tavallaan se oli ihan hauskaa, mutta en kyllä muista yhdenkään nimeä enää. Kylmästä ilmasta tuli myös kurkku kipeäksi... Tutustumisleikin jälkeen menimme takaisin yliopistolle, jossa kuokimme johonkin koulun viralliseen tilaisuuteen. No, siellä tarjoilijat täyttivät skumppalaseja ahkeraan tahtiin.. Ilta päättyi kuuluisaan olutbaariin, Deliriumiin, jossa on tarjolla 2500 erilaista olutmerkkiä.. 

Tänään alkaa luennot, mietin vaan että miten ihmeessä pääsen kolmelle eri luennolle samaan aikaan.. Outoa että ne on täysin samaan aikaan, vaikka mielestäni otin ne saman ohjelman alta.. no, ehkä katsoin väärin kuitenkin...

Honeymoon

I guess this is the honeymoon -phase of the cultural shock process :) I really like Belgium and Brussels. <3

Last weekend I took the train to Brugge, a beautiful city only one hour away from Brussels (by train). Here the best thing about travelling with trains is the weekend discount, -50%... So my trip to Brugge was only 14 euros two ways... (www.stib.be). The next day I went to La Louviere to meet a Belgium friend, who I got to know in St.Petersburg. That trip introduced me to the warmness and hospitality of Belgium people. The same day we also visited Waterloo, the famous battlefield where Napoleon was defeated. It was nice, there is 226 steps up to the Lion Mound where we, of course, climbed. It was windy but beautiful, sunny and warm day.. 

Well, this week I´ve been mainly just working from my apartment and seeing friends (now there is one other Erasmus student who I met yesterday, and more to come this week, jei!). Tomorrow I should test the local laundry (if only I´d understand the instructions of the machines...).. And next Monday the lectures will start!! :)

Viime viikonloppuna menin käymään kauniissa Bryggessä, vain tunnin ja vajaan 14 euron junamatkan päässä Brysselistä. Viikonloppuisin juniin saa ostaa puoleen hintaan viikonloppu-lippuja, se on etu jota kannattaa todella hyödyntää. Lisätietoja www.stib.be. Sunnuntaina menin käymään La Louvieressä, jossa asuu kaverini johon tutustuin viime syksynä Pietarissa. Oli todella mahtavaa päästä kurkkaamaan millaista belgialaisessa kodissa on ja päästä nauttimaan vieraanvaraisuudesta ja ystävällisyydestä. Samalla reissulla kävimme Waterloossa, missä on kuuluisa taistelukenttä jolla Napoleon kukistettiin 1815. Se oli aika jännä paikka, muistomerkkinä on kukkula, jonne voi kiivetä kaikki 226 rappusta. Tietysti menimme sinne ihailemaan maisemia tuulisena mutta aurinkoisena ja lämpimänä päivänä. Päivän päätteeksi kävimme juomassa Waterloo-oluet lähempänä Waterloon keskustaa :) 

Tällä viikolla olen enimmäkseen tehnyt hommia, tapasin yhden Erasmus opiskelijan joka oli eilen saapunut Brysseliin. Pikkuhiljaa tänne alkaa valumaan enemmän porukkaa ja ensi viikolla alkaakin koulu, jee :) Huomenna testaamaan paikallinen pesula, saa nähdä miten onnistuu käyttöohjeiden ymmärtäminen... :)

The ultimate exchange experience

I found the local IKEA today and bought all the goodies a Scandinavian person needs - such as knäckebröd, blueberry jam, lingonberry juice, coffee... And I found apple-cinnamon smelling candles, now I feel like home :) I also started my job today and received finally the contact information of my buddy student, I should contact her soon and tell that I´m already hereee! And everything is under control :) But I would like to have someone to go for a beer with me when my Finnish friend can´t make it.. ;)

Jeejee, IKEA löytyi helposti metromatkan päästä, keltaisen linjan "Ceria/Coovi" pysäkin läheltä. Ja löysinkin sieltä kaikkea mitä tarvitaan että pohjoismaalainen tuntee olonsa kotoisaksi :)

Sain eilen hoidettua bussikortin De Brouckéren läheltä olevasta MOBIB -toimistosta. Sinne tarvittiin passi, passikuva (jonka otin metroaseman automaatista, 5 euroa/ 5 kuvaa) ja osoitetiedot (vuokrasopimus). Hintaa lystille tuli yhteensä 50 euroa (45 euroa/kk + 5 euroa kortti). Olen muuten yli-ikäinen, alle 26-vuotiaat saisivat matkustaa 50 eurolla KOKO VUODEN!! No, ei mahda mitään... En vaan vieläkään ole ihan varma, että pitääkö tuota korttia näyttää kun astuu bussiin/ratikkaan/metroon sisään vai riittääkö että korttia pitää mukana (niinkuin Helsingissä)..?

Ehkäpä otan yhteyttä tutoriini, jonka yhteystiedot sain tänään. Voisin esittää muitankin tyhmiä kysymyksiä, kuten että missä ja miten lataan prepaid-kännykkäliittymäni? Ilmeisesti tavallisesta supermarketista, kuten Carrefourista voi ostaa eri hintaisia lappusia ja jotenkin se sitten päätyy liittymään puheajaksi.

Tuollaisia pikkujuttuja ei välttämättä tule aina ajatelleeksi kun ekaa kertaa vierailee toisessa maassa. Aluksi hämmästelin myös sitä, että täällä täytyy käyttää tietynlaisia roskapusseja, logollisia Brysselin sinivalkoisia roskapusseja, jotka sitten joka tiistai- ja perjantai-ilta haetaan kadulta, mihin ne voi jättää kasoiksi tukkimaan kulkuteitä.... Ehkä ne roskapöntöt veisi sitten vielä enemmän tilaa..?

Kävin eilen hoitamassa myös työpuhelinliittymän, mihin tarvitsin laskun sillä minun ei onneksi tarvitse maksaa puhelinkuluja. Tällä kertaa riitti että mukana oli koululta hakemani rekisteröitymislappu sekä vuokrasopimus. Ja siis kopiot näistä.. Kopiointi onnistui helposti yliopistolla, ostin vaan 2,50 euroa maksavan kopiokortin aulan vastaanottonaisilta. Ei tarvinnut etsiä siis putiikkia missä saisi kopioita... onneksi.

Eilisen päivän asioinnit sujuivat yllättävän helposti... Täällä onneksi suurin osa ihmisistä puhuu englantia, vaikka pääkieliä ovat ranska ja hollanti. Pitäisi kai opetella muutama sana kumpaakin kieltä...

No, tällaisia pieniä huomioita Brysselistä :)

Matka tänne meni hyvin. Ilmeisesti olin pakannut riittävän hyvin, sillä matkalaukku vilahti check-inistä niin nopeasti etten ehtinyt rekisteröidä paljonko se laukku painoi.. Taksikuski Brysselissä taisi hiukan huijata, en huomannut sanoa että laittaisi mittarin päälle ja hinnaksi matkalle lentokentältä Schaarbeekiin tuli 38 euroa, ehkä hiukan liikaa..

Vastassa oli todella mukava pariskunta jolta vuokrasin asunnon jo kesällä. Asunto on alimmassa kerroksessa, mutta vuokra on vaan 400 euroa kuussa sisältäen kaiken mahdollisen internetistä, sähköstä, keittiötarvikkeista petivaatteisiin. Sähköstä voi joutua maksamaan lisää jos se ylittää mittarilukemat liikaa.. Asunto sijaitsee "pahamaineisessa" Schaarbeekissä, joka on tunnettu marokkolaisista maahanmuuttajista. Todellisuudessa ongelmat sijaitsevat eri puolella missä itse asun enkä ole vielä nähnyt mitään Helsingin Sörkästä poikkeavaa (tosin Sörkkä on levottomampi).

Muita kustannuksia on puhelin, valitsin Basen prepaid-liittymän, johon alkuunsa latasin vaan 15 euroa ja vielä riittää saldoa vaikka olen muutamille kavereille lähes päivittäin soitellut ja tekstaillut. Matkakortille tulee hintaa 45 euroa kuussa, sillä olen yli-ikäinen opiskelija.. Alle 26-vuotiaille opiskelijoille matkakortti olisi maksanut vain 50 euroa VUODESSA! Ihan epäreilua, pöh.

Ruoka tuntuu olevan suunnilleen samoissa hinnoissa. Tuotekohtaisia eroja on jonkin verran, mutta perussapuskat (en siis syö lihaa) ei paljoa eroa Carrefourissa ja K-kaupassa. Keskustan ostoskadulta, Nieuwstraatilta löysin Ikea-kopion, Heman, josta löytyy myös kosmetiikkaa, vaatteita, yms. Jotenkin paikasta jäi silti Ikeamainen olo, vaikka se olikin paljon pienempi ja tuotevalikoima oli paljon suurempi. Mutta halvalla löytyi välttämättömimpiä tarvikkeita.

Tänään kävin yliopistolla hoitamassa loput asiat (piti vielä allekirjoittaa uusin versio Learning Agreementistä) ja huomenna jatkan käytännönjärjestelyjä (bussilippu).. Kaupunkiin rekisteröitymisen voi kuulemma jättää väliinkin, siinä kuitenkin kestää sen saman ajan saada paperit ulos byrokratian syövereistä kuin mitä vietän täällä kokonaisuudessaan. No, nyt kuitenkin jatkan maahan ja kulttuuriin tutustumista ja odotan koulun alkua 20.päivä..

one week to go..

I have said this a thousand times and I´ll say it again - the time flies! In only a week I will be in Brussels, at this moment perhaps in a taxi or train on my way to the new apartment... I mean, if everything goes as planned...

Today I got also the invitation to the introduction day on 20th of September and yesterday I got e-mail about their buddy system and do I want one. Only problem is that I´ll be there few weeks beforehand, so there might not be any available buddies to show me around. But I´m not worried about that, I´ll manage for sure just fine. Besides, I have one old friend working in Brussels and one other MITIM student doing her internship...

Ok, I need to start to think what to pack (actually I have already my suitcase full of clothes but I still need to go them through.. I can carry only 20 kilos in the airplane + the small back in the cabin..OMG). I´ll write later how I managed to pack everything...

P.S. It was exactly a year ago when I first walked on the streets of St.Petersburg... and I miss it..

Belgium..

Only about six weeks and I´ll be in Belgium :) I can´t believe it! I´ve done most of the preparations, tomorrow I should buy the flight ticket and pay the deposit for my flat (it´s a studio quite close to the centrum, jeeeei!!). I have already applied the student grant (opintoraha) from Kela for the studies abroad, I received the documents from LUT and HUB for acceptance & Erasmus money things.. Earlier this spring I selected the courses I´d have this autumn and did all those preparations...

I´m really proud of me this summer, I´ve managed to do some sports at least twice a week since Juhannus. Zumba, spinning, gym and jogging.. I have to try to continue that in Brussels too. Hopefully they have there student-friendly gyms :)

It´s summer and I´m spending it in an office (with a good air-conditioning)

...well maybe some day I´ll have a nice holiday somplace warm and sunny, drinking pina coladas from a coconut.

Before that I´ll finish my internship, study in Belgium, write my master´s thesis, graduate, find a good job and work there for a good while in order to earn a holiday. Oh boy.

Happily, I enjoy all of this. The feeling of leaving in few months, when everything is uncertain and you just picture things in your head.. Having a lot to study and to do but knowing that one day it will pay off.. I do enjoy planning and dreaming about future! But still, every morning when I pass by the coffee/spice factory on my way to work, I smell the fresh coffee often mixed with the cinnamon scent, I think how I should always remember this moment...

It´s summer!

Whow, I haven´t been writing here in a long time..

The spring was quite busy and in the end of May my little black minilaptop decided that she has been working too hard and kept really ugly noices so I had to take her to the mainentance..

The reason for being so busy was not only the studies but also looking for the internship, arranging the exchange semester, helping out in the 1.st EU-Russia Innovation Forum, packing and moving out of Lappeenranta back to Helsinki. The part of the studies that kept me busy was the intensive course of International High-Technology Marketing (still 1 report to write for that, due date is in the end of this week) and writing of the proposal for my Master´s thesis. Concerning my thesis topic, I´ll write more in the beginning of autumn when I know for sure if I´ll be working for a certain project...

Yes, I got an internship/summerjob with a logistics company (invoicing department)! Yeei! I started 7.th of June and I have to say that I´m just now getting to be familiar with the job, even though I have earlier experience in these kind of things, like invoicing and bookkeeping. (but not in the field of logistics...!). So far I´ve liked the job a lot, the people are really nice and the athmosphere is international.

Yes, I got to go for an exchange next semester! Yeei! I decided to go to Brussels, Belgium (HUB) for several reasons and day by day I get more confident that my decision was excellent. Now I just need to find a flat...

Well, here´re some news, I´ll add up some photos soon (specially those from the 1st EU-Russia innovation forum, where we had these nice pink scarfs and wearing it I look like a fligh attendant)...

Amazing winter

It´s been busy, not just with school but trying to find internship. I have applied only to those companies/organisations where I really want to work and I could build my future career. But so far, I have had only one interview. Well, I haven´t lost my positive thinking here yet, there´s still time.

At school, we have thousands of group works again. There are Strategic Management of Growth where we need to write approximately 10 pages report about the growth of one company, International Financial Management where we are writing about eBay (minimum 10 pages) and Consulting Project which we are doing for the local icehockey team SaiPa. I´m really excited about that project because it is really interesting and we have totally the best group to do that.

What else... Yes, Quantitative Business Research where we should read research proposals and judge them (and write few pages), Russian studies are still going on and we have exams in the end of this month about International Financial Management and Supply and Innovation Management plus we have the deadlines for most of the reports somewhere there... Then starts the courses of Economics of Innovation and International High Technology Marketing. And I should start to build ideas about the topic of my Master´s Thesis. You can see that it´s a double degree I´m working on.

So, I´m sitting in the student flat in Lappeenranta at the moment, looking outside amazed how beautiful sunny weather there is. And going back to work...

First lecture

The spring semester started for MITIM students on Monday with orientation day followed by Finnish sauna evening. Also Tuesday we had more orientation, mainly about the schedule and the electronic systems, such as Noppa, WebOodi and Blackboard.

Today I had first Russian lesson. Most of the group started already 11th of January, so we have some catching up. At least the vocabulary is different and a bit wider than what we have been learning, but we probably went ahead with the grammatic. The book is (of course) different than the one we used in GSOM, but it looked quite ok. For me the best thing is that it´s in Finnish. Probably for foreign students it´s not that nice..

After Russian we had Strategic Management of Growth lecture. Shot said that it was very Finnish. Maybe she was referring to the professors Finnish way of speaking English, the humor and loose boundaries (it´s not as scary serious as in Russia, the deadlines are up to us, participation is not so required,etc.) and the examples of Finnish companies, such as Fiskars... But I liked the lecture, it was interesting.

Inspired by the lecture, I will go Saturday to buy or loan few books by Sun Tzu and Machiavelli. I don´t know if I can agree that the best way of learning strategy for business is to learn how to fight wars, but that´s what everyone else is doing. So I guess it´s compulsory to understand what everyone else is thinking in the business field. I just hope that I would work for more advantaged company in the future.

(I know, I sound too naive and idealistic sometimes. Today I "had a little bit of sugar and milk in my coffee")

New title

Since I´m no longer studying in St.Petersburg, I decided to change the title of the blog as well... So, now I´m here in Lappeenranta, starting the spring semester tomorrow. Can´t wait for seeing everyone after a month long holiday :)

Feelings

I wrote a list about memorable things in St.Pete last time in Finnish. I don´t always have time to write both in Finnish and in English and I know that there are few people in the audience who necessarily wouldn´t enjoy reading my blog in English only.. So, sorry for that! At least Shot and Joona are writing only in English..

I´ve been now few days back in Helsinki, which is great. Today I noticed that there are few annoying things that I got really used to during the stay in Russia. Annoying things such:

- Throwing accidentally paper and bio waste to the regular waste bin, even I should recycle them. In Russia there wasn´t recycling possibilities so I got used (didn´t accept it as a good thing though!) to throw paper, glass, metal, biowaste etc. to a regular bin....

- Watching out for icicles, even there are sooo few of them in Helsinki.

- Feeling first annoyed in the back of your head by the fact that your shoes will get ruined when you´re going out for a walk. Then annoyement changes to relief when you remember that they don´t use salt in Helsinki to keep the streets unslippery. They use sand here, which is better than salt in sooo many ways.

- Going out for a walk in the city and wondering where are all the old fat ladys with headscarfs and wondering who are these people walking with sticks around Töölönlahti. The image of hundereds of old fat russian ladys has burned in my brains. I just can´t get rid of it. Can´t.

- When buying food, there´s no need to buy 5 litre canisters of fresh water. The tapwater is drinkable, fresh and soo good in Finland..

- When jumping to a bus, you can´t get in from the backdoors and you can´t pay for the old fat lady selling the bus tickets. You have to go in from the frontdoor and pay the money to the driver while everyone else is waiting. And the ticket is not 20 rubels (= about 0,50 euros), it is 2,60 euros inside Helsinki. Damn.. But, paying with cellphone is possible and very easy, since my wallet is still full of rubles, not euros.. unfortunatelly...

- Watching anything from TV and understanding it all, everything is in Finnish or if the show is in some other language, there are Finnish subtitles. Love it.

- Walking in and getting slammed by the door because the guy walking in front of you didn´t held the door open for you. The unpoliteness is common. Once you step inside the boarders of Finland, don´t expect guys to hold door open for you, help you with heavy backs, give you a seat in a full metro or give you a compliment about the way you look. Just don´t. And feel veryvery happy when a Finnish guy does some of that to you, then he really likes you. Or he is a true gentleman.

Well, just few things.. Probably in few weeks I´ll be feeling and acting normally again. The next question is, when I will start to miss Russia?

Opiskelukaverini Joona ja Shot kirjoittivat kumpikin omassa blogissaan listan mieleenpainuneista asioista syyslukukauden aikana. Ajattelin sitten tehdä saman omalta osaltani, voi olla että osa asioista on samoja ja kaikkia en muista edes mainita..



1. Syntymäpäiväni ja kavereiden järjestämä yllätys-limusiini-ajelu (pinkillä limusiinilla) ja illanvietto sen jälkeen.

2. Ihanat uudet opiskelukaverit, koko MITIM-porukka. lov u!

3. Asuntola torakoineen ja tippuvine kaakeleineen.

4. Muutto pois asuntolalta ja vartijana toiminut kiukkuinen vanha ukko. Onneksi päästiin lopulta pois.

5. Technology Management -luennot, huhhuh.

6. Ensimmäisen parin viikon aikana hoidetut käytännönasiat ja jonottamiseen kulunut käsittämätön määrä aikaa.

7. Naamakarkit. Niiin hyviä, niin makeita…

8. Ruoka. Stollen piirakat, Zoom Cafén mainiot annokset ja tunnelma, The Other Siden chili con carne ja tunnelma, Café Signerin englantia puhuvat tarjoiljat, sushipaikat, lettupaikat, tee ja kakkupalat.

9. Uusi asunto ja vuokranantajat. Kämppikset, ihanat Laura ja Nadja. Asunnon keltainen keittiö, kaasulla toimiva vedenlämmitin kylppärissä, neuvosto-romanttinen sisustus, ikonit joka paikassa, ikivanha piano...

10. Kulkukoirat. Eipä niitä enää pakkasilla ole näkynyt..

11. Lumi ja jääpuikot. Eikä sitä lunta edes aurata kunnolla pois. Pitäisi olla lumikengät. Ja kypärä - lumipuikot on ihan valtavia ja niitä on kaikissa räystäissä.

12. Uusivuosi ja uudenvuodenkulkueen pienet ihmis-tiikerit.

13. Suolatut jalkakäytävät. Kengät menee todella nopeasti pilalle.

14. Kenkäkaupat - myynnissä lämpimiä, karvavuorattuja, "röpelö"pohjaisia, käytännöllisiä mutta kauniita kenkiä puolet halvemmalla kuin Suomessa..

15. Mummot - busseissa lipunmyyjinä, museoissa joka huoneessa vartijoina, kadunlakaisijoina, myymässä purkitettuja sieniä ja tillinippuja kadunkulmissa, jne.jne.

16. Liikenne. En ihan heti uskaltaisi ajella täällä...

17. Yläkerran vesivahinko. Vettä valui vessaan tiputtamalla ja kun hädissämme soitimme vuokranantajalle, häntä vaan nauratti. Vesivahingolle ei tietääkseni ole tehty mitään sen jälkeen.

18. GSOM yleisesti. Vartijat ovella, vain kortilla sisään. Narikka alakerrassa. Kahvilan söötti tyttö, jota huvitti venäjänkieliset yritykseni ostaa mitä tahansa. Master´s office, toivottavasti todella saan alkuperäiset tutkintotodistukseni takaisin.. Hyvät ja huonot luennoitsijat, kumpiakin löytyi. ("Women are for everyday use"??)

19. Koti-ikävä ja ikävä kotona. Niillä jotka jää, on vaikeampaa kuin niillä jotka lähtevät. Varsinkin silloin on todella hankalaa olla reissussa kun jotain sattuu kotona. Ja silloin tuntuu vankilalta kun ei ole vielä saanut monikertaviisumia että pääsisi pois.

20. Kulttuuri. Mariinski-teatteri on todella kaunis, Venäläisen taiteen museo on parempi kuin Ermitaasi, Jazz Philharmonic Hall ja sen Duke Ellington baari. Ja niin edelleen. Paljon tuli nähtyä mutta paljon jäi näkemättäkin.

21. Kondensoitu maito. Jotkut kuulemma juovat sitä suoraan purkista... Minä laitan lettujen päälle.

22. Edullinen bussimatka Suomeen ja takaisin venäläisellä pikkubussilla. Suosittelen, lähtee joka päivä Pietarista ja Helsingistä klo 11.00 ja 21.00 (klo 20.00 Helsingistä).

23. Sikainfluenssa. Ja koko MITIM-porukan viikon kestänyt karanteeni. Se oli ihan mukava tauko.

24. Nähtävyydet. Ylösnousemuksen kirkko (Kirkko veren päällä), Kristuksen kirkastuksen kirkko ja sen todella ammattimainen mahtava kuoro, Vladimirin jumlanäidin kirkko, Marsin aukio (Vallankumouksen sankareiden muistomerkki), Mihailovskin puisto, Vaskiratsastaja ja Aleksandrovskin puisto, Palatsiaukio, Pietarhovi, Suomenlahden karu mutta tavallaan kaunis ranta Vasiljevski Ostrovin länsipäässä, Aleksanteri Nevskin luostari, Dostojevskin kotimuseo, jnejne. Kuten sanottu edellä, paljon tuli nähtyä mutta paljon jäi näkemättäkin...

25. Turkit. Kun pakkanen kiristyi riittävästi, kaupunki oli täynnä turkkeja. Keinoturkiksen ymmärrän vielä, mutta että pukea päälleen toisen selkänahka (pahimmillaan elävänä nyljetty)… Ei kiitos!!

26. Radio Ermitage. Hyvää musiikkia, ei jatkuvasti samoja biisejä niin kuin esim. Groove FM:llä Suomessa.

27. Joulukoristeet. Diskopalloja Nevski Prospektilla, kaikkina mahdollisina sateenkaaren väreinä, vilkkuvina ja välkkyvinä. Oli vaikeuksia päästä joulutunnelmaan kun on tottunut perinteiseen kynttilänvaloon ja hillittyyn joulukoristelu perinteeseen.

Snow

St.Petersburg Times on paikallinen englanninkielinen lehti. Sen mukaan viime viikonloppuna Pietarissa on satanut 35 cm lunta, mikä on enemmän kuin 130 vuoteen. Kaupunki on jokseenkin sekaisin lumen vuoksi, esim. autot ovat peittyneet valtavien lumikinosten alle, eikä niitä ihan heti sieltä saa pois.

According to St.Petersburg Times, here´s more snow than in past 130 years... That´s quite a lot, for example the cars parked next to the streets are totally covered with snow and I think it´s not easy job to get them out of there..

Hyvää uuttavuotta! Happy new year!

Tässä on nyt pari päivää kohta elelty uutta vuosikymmentä Venäjän maalla. Tultiin uudeksi vuodeksi Sakarin kanssa tänne Pietariin ihmettelemään vähän isomman kaupungin menoa. Ja olihan se aikamoista. Kutsuin aattoillaksi tänne asunnolle muutamia suomalaisia opiskelukavereita, joille kokkasin tomaattikeittoa ja lettuja. Tuliaisina kundit toivat Stollen herkullisen piirakan. Stolle on muuten aivan loistava paikallinen piirakka-ketju, joiden ravintolat on hauskan tunnelmallisia ja hinnat ei päätä huimaa. Suosittelen lounaaksi Stollen tonnikalasalaattia ja kaalipiirakkaa, luonnollisesti teepannun kera..

Illallisen jälkeen kaverit lähtivät baariin juhlimaan vuoden vaihtumista, me Sakarin kanssa jätettiin savuinen klubi-meininki väliin ja mentiin Palatsiaukiolle hengailemaan. Käytiin me sentään "Kofe-hausissa" juomassa glögit ja lämmittelemässä matkan varrella. Kun vuosi vaihtui, seisoskelimme Ermitaasin kulmalla katsellen mahtavia ilotulituksia, joita ammuttiin Vasilin saaren majakoilta. Ei hullumpaa...

Ilotulitusten jälkeen lähdimme kotiinpäin. Kävelimme pääkatua, Nevski Prospektia pitkin, joka oli suljettu autoilta valtavan ihmismäärän vuoksi. Ilmassa oli enemmän juhlatunnelmaa kuin pitkiin aikoihin uutena vuotena...

Ainoa mikä tunnelmaa on hieman haitannut viimeisinä päivinä on tuhannet miliisit joka kadun kulmassa. 30.päivän hauskassa uudenvuoden kulkueessa kulki enemmän miliisejä kuin pakkasukoiksi, tiikereiksi (!?) ja pelleiksi pukeutuneita aikuisia ja lapsia. Venäjällä kannattaa olla varovainen varsinkin ulkomaalaisena, ettei satu miliisin ryövättäväksi. No, onneksi niin ei käynyt... :)
