Honeymoon

I guess this is the honeymoon -phase of the cultural shock process :) I really like Belgium and Brussels. <3

Last weekend I took the train to Brugge, a beautiful city only one hour away from Brussels (by train). Here the best thing about travelling with trains is the weekend discount, -50%... So my trip to Brugge was only 14 euros two ways... (www.stib.be). The next day I went to La Louviere to meet a Belgium friend, who I got to know in St.Petersburg. That trip introduced me to the warmness and hospitality of Belgium people. The same day we also visited Waterloo, the famous battlefield where Napoleon was defeated. It was nice, there is 226 steps up to the Lion Mound where we, of course, climbed. It was windy but beautiful, sunny and warm day.. 

Well, this week I´ve been mainly just working from my apartment and seeing friends (now there is one other Erasmus student who I met yesterday, and more to come this week, jei!). Tomorrow I should test the local laundry (if only I´d understand the instructions of the machines...).. And next Monday the lectures will start!! :)

Viime viikonloppuna menin käymään kauniissa Bryggessä, vain tunnin ja vajaan 14 euron junamatkan päässä Brysselistä. Viikonloppuisin juniin saa ostaa puoleen hintaan viikonloppu-lippuja, se on etu jota kannattaa todella hyödyntää. Lisätietoja www.stib.be. Sunnuntaina menin käymään La Louvieressä, jossa asuu kaverini johon tutustuin viime syksynä Pietarissa. Oli todella mahtavaa päästä kurkkaamaan millaista belgialaisessa kodissa on ja päästä nauttimaan vieraanvaraisuudesta ja ystävällisyydestä. Samalla reissulla kävimme Waterloossa, missä on kuuluisa taistelukenttä jolla Napoleon kukistettiin 1815. Se oli aika jännä paikka, muistomerkkinä on kukkula, jonne voi kiivetä kaikki 226 rappusta. Tietysti menimme sinne ihailemaan maisemia tuulisena mutta aurinkoisena ja lämpimänä päivänä. Päivän päätteeksi kävimme juomassa Waterloo-oluet lähempänä Waterloon keskustaa :) 

Tällä viikolla olen enimmäkseen tehnyt hommia, tapasin yhden Erasmus opiskelijan joka oli eilen saapunut Brysseliin. Pikkuhiljaa tänne alkaa valumaan enemmän porukkaa ja ensi viikolla alkaakin koulu, jee :) Huomenna testaamaan paikallinen pesula, saa nähdä miten onnistuu käyttöohjeiden ymmärtäminen... :)

The ultimate exchange experience

I found the local IKEA today and bought all the goodies a Scandinavian person needs - such as knäckebröd, blueberry jam, lingonberry juice, coffee... And I found apple-cinnamon smelling candles, now I feel like home :) I also started my job today and received finally the contact information of my buddy student, I should contact her soon and tell that I´m already hereee! And everything is under control :) But I would like to have someone to go for a beer with me when my Finnish friend can´t make it.. ;)

Jeejee, IKEA löytyi helposti metromatkan päästä, keltaisen linjan "Ceria/Coovi" pysäkin läheltä. Ja löysinkin sieltä kaikkea mitä tarvitaan että pohjoismaalainen tuntee olonsa kotoisaksi :)

Sain eilen hoidettua bussikortin De Brouckéren läheltä olevasta MOBIB -toimistosta. Sinne tarvittiin passi, passikuva (jonka otin metroaseman automaatista, 5 euroa/ 5 kuvaa) ja osoitetiedot (vuokrasopimus). Hintaa lystille tuli yhteensä 50 euroa (45 euroa/kk + 5 euroa kortti). Olen muuten yli-ikäinen, alle 26-vuotiaat saisivat matkustaa 50 eurolla KOKO VUODEN!! No, ei mahda mitään... En vaan vieläkään ole ihan varma, että pitääkö tuota korttia näyttää kun astuu bussiin/ratikkaan/metroon sisään vai riittääkö että korttia pitää mukana (niinkuin Helsingissä)..?

Ehkäpä otan yhteyttä tutoriini, jonka yhteystiedot sain tänään. Voisin esittää muitankin tyhmiä kysymyksiä, kuten että missä ja miten lataan prepaid-kännykkäliittymäni? Ilmeisesti tavallisesta supermarketista, kuten Carrefourista voi ostaa eri hintaisia lappusia ja jotenkin se sitten päätyy liittymään puheajaksi.

Tuollaisia pikkujuttuja ei välttämättä tule aina ajatelleeksi kun ekaa kertaa vierailee toisessa maassa. Aluksi hämmästelin myös sitä, että täällä täytyy käyttää tietynlaisia roskapusseja, logollisia Brysselin sinivalkoisia roskapusseja, jotka sitten joka tiistai- ja perjantai-ilta haetaan kadulta, mihin ne voi jättää kasoiksi tukkimaan kulkuteitä.... Ehkä ne roskapöntöt veisi sitten vielä enemmän tilaa..?

Kävin eilen hoitamassa myös työpuhelinliittymän, mihin tarvitsin laskun sillä minun ei onneksi tarvitse maksaa puhelinkuluja. Tällä kertaa riitti että mukana oli koululta hakemani rekisteröitymislappu sekä vuokrasopimus. Ja siis kopiot näistä.. Kopiointi onnistui helposti yliopistolla, ostin vaan 2,50 euroa maksavan kopiokortin aulan vastaanottonaisilta. Ei tarvinnut etsiä siis putiikkia missä saisi kopioita... onneksi.

Eilisen päivän asioinnit sujuivat yllättävän helposti... Täällä onneksi suurin osa ihmisistä puhuu englantia, vaikka pääkieliä ovat ranska ja hollanti. Pitäisi kai opetella muutama sana kumpaakin kieltä...

No, tällaisia pieniä huomioita Brysselistä :)

Matka tänne meni hyvin. Ilmeisesti olin pakannut riittävän hyvin, sillä matkalaukku vilahti check-inistä niin nopeasti etten ehtinyt rekisteröidä paljonko se laukku painoi.. Taksikuski Brysselissä taisi hiukan huijata, en huomannut sanoa että laittaisi mittarin päälle ja hinnaksi matkalle lentokentältä Schaarbeekiin tuli 38 euroa, ehkä hiukan liikaa..

Vastassa oli todella mukava pariskunta jolta vuokrasin asunnon jo kesällä. Asunto on alimmassa kerroksessa, mutta vuokra on vaan 400 euroa kuussa sisältäen kaiken mahdollisen internetistä, sähköstä, keittiötarvikkeista petivaatteisiin. Sähköstä voi joutua maksamaan lisää jos se ylittää mittarilukemat liikaa.. Asunto sijaitsee "pahamaineisessa" Schaarbeekissä, joka on tunnettu marokkolaisista maahanmuuttajista. Todellisuudessa ongelmat sijaitsevat eri puolella missä itse asun enkä ole vielä nähnyt mitään Helsingin Sörkästä poikkeavaa (tosin Sörkkä on levottomampi).

Muita kustannuksia on puhelin, valitsin Basen prepaid-liittymän, johon alkuunsa latasin vaan 15 euroa ja vielä riittää saldoa vaikka olen muutamille kavereille lähes päivittäin soitellut ja tekstaillut. Matkakortille tulee hintaa 45 euroa kuussa, sillä olen yli-ikäinen opiskelija.. Alle 26-vuotiaille opiskelijoille matkakortti olisi maksanut vain 50 euroa VUODESSA! Ihan epäreilua, pöh.

Ruoka tuntuu olevan suunnilleen samoissa hinnoissa. Tuotekohtaisia eroja on jonkin verran, mutta perussapuskat (en siis syö lihaa) ei paljoa eroa Carrefourissa ja K-kaupassa. Keskustan ostoskadulta, Nieuwstraatilta löysin Ikea-kopion, Heman, josta löytyy myös kosmetiikkaa, vaatteita, yms. Jotenkin paikasta jäi silti Ikeamainen olo, vaikka se olikin paljon pienempi ja tuotevalikoima oli paljon suurempi. Mutta halvalla löytyi välttämättömimpiä tarvikkeita.

Tänään kävin yliopistolla hoitamassa loput asiat (piti vielä allekirjoittaa uusin versio Learning Agreementistä) ja huomenna jatkan käytännönjärjestelyjä (bussilippu).. Kaupunkiin rekisteröitymisen voi kuulemma jättää väliinkin, siinä kuitenkin kestää sen saman ajan saada paperit ulos byrokratian syövereistä kuin mitä vietän täällä kokonaisuudessaan. No, nyt kuitenkin jatkan maahan ja kulttuuriin tutustumista ja odotan koulun alkua 20.päivä..

one week to go..

I have said this a thousand times and I´ll say it again - the time flies! In only a week I will be in Brussels, at this moment perhaps in a taxi or train on my way to the new apartment... I mean, if everything goes as planned...

Today I got also the invitation to the introduction day on 20th of September and yesterday I got e-mail about their buddy system and do I want one. Only problem is that I´ll be there few weeks beforehand, so there might not be any available buddies to show me around. But I´m not worried about that, I´ll manage for sure just fine. Besides, I have one old friend working in Brussels and one other MITIM student doing her internship...

Ok, I need to start to think what to pack (actually I have already my suitcase full of clothes but I still need to go them through.. I can carry only 20 kilos in the airplane + the small back in the cabin..OMG). I´ll write later how I managed to pack everything...

P.S. It was exactly a year ago when I first walked on the streets of St.Petersburg... and I miss it..

Belgium..

Only about six weeks and I´ll be in Belgium :) I can´t believe it! I´ve done most of the preparations, tomorrow I should buy the flight ticket and pay the deposit for my flat (it´s a studio quite close to the centrum, jeeeei!!). I have already applied the student grant (opintoraha) from Kela for the studies abroad, I received the documents from LUT and HUB for acceptance & Erasmus money things.. Earlier this spring I selected the courses I´d have this autumn and did all those preparations...

I´m really proud of me this summer, I´ve managed to do some sports at least twice a week since Juhannus. Zumba, spinning, gym and jogging.. I have to try to continue that in Brussels too. Hopefully they have there student-friendly gyms :)

It´s summer and I´m spending it in an office (with a good air-conditioning)

...well maybe some day I´ll have a nice holiday somplace warm and sunny, drinking pina coladas from a coconut.

Before that I´ll finish my internship, study in Belgium, write my master´s thesis, graduate, find a good job and work there for a good while in order to earn a holiday. Oh boy.

Happily, I enjoy all of this. The feeling of leaving in few months, when everything is uncertain and you just picture things in your head.. Having a lot to study and to do but knowing that one day it will pay off.. I do enjoy planning and dreaming about future! But still, every morning when I pass by the coffee/spice factory on my way to work, I smell the fresh coffee often mixed with the cinnamon scent, I think how I should always remember this moment...

It´s summer!

Whow, I haven´t been writing here in a long time..

The spring was quite busy and in the end of May my little black minilaptop decided that she has been working too hard and kept really ugly noices so I had to take her to the mainentance..

The reason for being so busy was not only the studies but also looking for the internship, arranging the exchange semester, helping out in the 1.st EU-Russia Innovation Forum, packing and moving out of Lappeenranta back to Helsinki. The part of the studies that kept me busy was the intensive course of International High-Technology Marketing (still 1 report to write for that, due date is in the end of this week) and writing of the proposal for my Master´s thesis. Concerning my thesis topic, I´ll write more in the beginning of autumn when I know for sure if I´ll be working for a certain project...

Yes, I got an internship/summerjob with a logistics company (invoicing department)! Yeei! I started 7.th of June and I have to say that I´m just now getting to be familiar with the job, even though I have earlier experience in these kind of things, like invoicing and bookkeeping. (but not in the field of logistics...!). So far I´ve liked the job a lot, the people are really nice and the athmosphere is international.

Yes, I got to go for an exchange next semester! Yeei! I decided to go to Brussels, Belgium (HUB) for several reasons and day by day I get more confident that my decision was excellent. Now I just need to find a flat...

Well, here´re some news, I´ll add up some photos soon (specially those from the 1st EU-Russia innovation forum, where we had these nice pink scarfs and wearing it I look like a fligh attendant)...
