Defense completed

We had the last challenge of the MITIM program yesterday and the day before. We had the public defense, where we needed to present our theses and answer to any questions that the committee had. The committee consisted of several professors from GSOM and from an other university from St.Petersburg, professors and the dean from LUT and two company representatives (Technopolis Lappeenranta and a small consulting company). As the defense was a public one, there was also some quests. 

My turn to defend my thesis was on Tuesday at three. I have never before been so nervous about presenting. But as I started my presentation, most of the nervousness changed to excitement and the presentation went really well. As the committee started to ask questions, my heart started to beat like hell again. Fortunately the questions were rather easy for me to answer and there were not many questions. I got really good feedback too. Overall, I'm very satisfied with my grade (although, we still need to wait until Monday when we'll get the final grades). 

It's done now, we're Masters :D

Almost ready with the thesis..

Writing, Writing, Writing..

I spend every day several hours at the library in LUT, but still I feel like my thesis is not progressing fast enough.. We'll have the next seminar in GSOM in St.Petersburg 10th -11th of March and I'm guessing we should have quite a lot of new things to present to the supervisors and other MITIMs... 


I have been dealing a lot with the post-exchange paperwork and stuff, which is quite surprisingly time-consuming. I try to get everything sorted out during this week. 


Time really flies, next I should start to look for a job... 


Depending on the company & field of business, I'd like to do project management related job in R&D or business development (in processes and/or operations). Of course, CSR related positions are always interesting, although I think CSR can be an approach on the work that I'd do (meaning that I'd consider the impacts of decisions and actions in the stakeholders from the point view CSR even though I'd do something that's not directly related to it). And I'd love to work abroad or at least in an multinational environment...


Let's see what happens :)

Autumn in Belgium

It´s autumn here for sure.. It´s been raining now almost all the time for past week. I don´t really mind the rain, I just miss my pink Nokia Hai rubber boots! 

MITIMs back in Finland and Russia had their research seminar in St.Petersburg. We exchange students were also asked to write the report and presentation slides for today. In addition, we need to peer review someone else´s work and write 2 pages report about that. Hmm, I actually feel lonely now. I miss the group spirit and the sharing of ideas.. And of course I know that the guys are having great time in St.Pete at the moment... ;)

I really like it here in Belgium, I haven´t yet had this "must go back home" -feeling that usually comes in the first months (I´ve heard).

Although, today I couldn´t help missing my MITIM colleagues.. Main reason for missing them is the fact that it is my birthday today.. Last year in St.Petersburg my colleagues arranged me the surprise of a lifetime - a ride with pink limousine with good friends and plenty of Russian sparkling wine. After the ride the night ended with dinner & dancing. That was spectacular evening that I will never forget!!

 Love & miss you guys, hope you´re doing good where ever you are right now!

It´s summer!

Whow, I haven´t been writing here in a long time..

The spring was quite busy and in the end of May my little black minilaptop decided that she has been working too hard and kept really ugly noices so I had to take her to the mainentance..

The reason for being so busy was not only the studies but also looking for the internship, arranging the exchange semester, helping out in the 1.st EU-Russia Innovation Forum, packing and moving out of Lappeenranta back to Helsinki. The part of the studies that kept me busy was the intensive course of International High-Technology Marketing (still 1 report to write for that, due date is in the end of this week) and writing of the proposal for my Master´s thesis. Concerning my thesis topic, I´ll write more in the beginning of autumn when I know for sure if I´ll be working for a certain project...

Yes, I got an internship/summerjob with a logistics company (invoicing department)! Yeei! I started 7.th of June and I have to say that I´m just now getting to be familiar with the job, even though I have earlier experience in these kind of things, like invoicing and bookkeeping. (but not in the field of logistics...!). So far I´ve liked the job a lot, the people are really nice and the athmosphere is international.

Yes, I got to go for an exchange next semester! Yeei! I decided to go to Brussels, Belgium (HUB) for several reasons and day by day I get more confident that my decision was excellent. Now I just need to find a flat...

Well, here´re some news, I´ll add up some photos soon (specially those from the 1st EU-Russia innovation forum, where we had these nice pink scarfs and wearing it I look like a fligh attendant)...

Amazing winter

It´s been busy, not just with school but trying to find internship. I have applied only to those companies/organisations where I really want to work and I could build my future career. But so far, I have had only one interview. Well, I haven´t lost my positive thinking here yet, there´s still time.

At school, we have thousands of group works again. There are Strategic Management of Growth where we need to write approximately 10 pages report about the growth of one company, International Financial Management where we are writing about eBay (minimum 10 pages) and Consulting Project which we are doing for the local icehockey team SaiPa. I´m really excited about that project because it is really interesting and we have totally the best group to do that.

What else... Yes, Quantitative Business Research where we should read research proposals and judge them (and write few pages), Russian studies are still going on and we have exams in the end of this month about International Financial Management and Supply and Innovation Management plus we have the deadlines for most of the reports somewhere there... Then starts the courses of Economics of Innovation and International High Technology Marketing. And I should start to build ideas about the topic of my Master´s Thesis. You can see that it´s a double degree I´m working on.

So, I´m sitting in the student flat in Lappeenranta at the moment, looking outside amazed how beautiful sunny weather there is. And going back to work...

First lecture

The spring semester started for MITIM students on Monday with orientation day followed by Finnish sauna evening. Also Tuesday we had more orientation, mainly about the schedule and the electronic systems, such as Noppa, WebOodi and Blackboard.

Today I had first Russian lesson. Most of the group started already 11th of January, so we have some catching up. At least the vocabulary is different and a bit wider than what we have been learning, but we probably went ahead with the grammatic. The book is (of course) different than the one we used in GSOM, but it looked quite ok. For me the best thing is that it´s in Finnish. Probably for foreign students it´s not that nice..

After Russian we had Strategic Management of Growth lecture. Shot said that it was very Finnish. Maybe she was referring to the professors Finnish way of speaking English, the humor and loose boundaries (it´s not as scary serious as in Russia, the deadlines are up to us, participation is not so required,etc.) and the examples of Finnish companies, such as Fiskars... But I liked the lecture, it was interesting.

Inspired by the lecture, I will go Saturday to buy or loan few books by Sun Tzu and Machiavelli. I don´t know if I can agree that the best way of learning strategy for business is to learn how to fight wars, but that´s what everyone else is doing. So I guess it´s compulsory to understand what everyone else is thinking in the business field. I just hope that I would work for more advantaged company in the future.

(I know, I sound too naive and idealistic sometimes. Today I "had a little bit of sugar and milk in my coffee")

New title

Since I´m no longer studying in St.Petersburg, I decided to change the title of the blog as well... So, now I´m here in Lappeenranta, starting the spring semester tomorrow. Can´t wait for seeing everyone after a month long holiday :)

Puupää

Tässä vaiheessa tuntuu siltä, että aivokapasiteetissa pitäisi tehdä suursiivous - turha informaatio pois ja hyödyllinen tilalle. Kyllä, yritän lukea tenttiin. Tiistaina on Managerial Economicsista tentti, ihan perusjuttuja kansantaloustieteistä, mutta englanniksi ne on vähän taas hankala palauttaa mieleen.. No, valivali, sellaista se on.

Toinen hauska juttu on ne pari raporttia mitkä pitää palauttaa myös tiistaina. Tällä hetkellä tuntuu siltä, että lausemuodostukseni on siellä 5-6-vuotiaan tasolla "This concept is very useful when making big decisions"... jepulis, etukäteen pahoitteluni Lappeenrantaan ko. raporttia tarkastavalle professorille!
Turhauttavinta tässä on se, että ei ehdi eikä jaksa parannella enää. Ellei huomenna tule ylimääräistä energiapuuskaa tai yllättävää inspiraation väläystä (tulisipa!). Toisaalta, on opettavaista yrittää tehdä parhaansa kovassa paineessa, joistain töistä voisi periaatteessa tulla helmiäkin.

Asuntolalla asuvilla kanssaopiskelijoilla oli eilen pikkujoulubileet (asuntolalla). Olisi ollut kiva mennä, mutta jotenkin se päivä meni hujahtaen ohi ja edelleen liian monta juttua oli tekemättä. Kuulin että pikkujoulut olivat olleet onnistuneet ja glögi oli hyvää :)

Päivän lausahdus tähän loppuun: "Autuaita ovat puupäät, sillä he eivät huku".

Hi there!

I forgot to write in English the last time. But anyway, in brief, from St.Pete to Helsinki the cheapest transportation might be the mini-buses going from Ploshad Vosstanija. And they´ll take you to your home, which is nice in the middle of the night. The buses leave every day at 11.00 and 21.00 and it costs 25 euros. There are many different companies, like Star Way and AMG travel (written with cyrillics naturally) who have quite modern cars and these older ladys in the bus as guides. Those ladys really take care of you, last time I got some candy and she walked me in front of the line at the passport control, talking something nice in Russian, which I didn´t understand. But I have to say, the experience was better than I expected.

There´s five more exams coming up, Managerial Economics on Tuesday, Russian on Friday, Intellectual Capital Management on Saturday, CSR & Cross-cultural management on 23.rd and Qualitative methods in business research on 28.th... And I should write two reports by 15.th. Whoa.. I thought that I would have time to have some fun at the dormitory pre-Christmas party, but it looks like I can´t go. Simply, I don´t have enough hours in a day..

Well, I promised to myself to walk some day home from school and take some pictures on the way. You should see the Christmas decorations here, they are quite.... how to put this.... amazing...

The picture below is from my street, ulitsa rubinsteina. In the yellow building there´s a theatre, I can´t remember the name though (Europa?). The picture was taken some weeks ago, when the sun was last time out there for few hours. It´s quite cloudy here.

Next Tuesday we have exam on Knowledge Management and we should write a proposal for Master thesis by Monday. For the proposal we should have a clear picture of the topic, form the research questions and choose a Russian instructor for the thesis.  It feels unfair, because for us Finnish students the process should start in LUT during the spring. So, actually we don´t have any idea if LUT even likes our ideas and many of us don´t have a good topic for the thesis. But still, during the most busy time, we have to create the proposal, ppt-show with our voice recorded on it and published in YouTube and talk with a Russian professor and get him/her convinced to work with me...
Whew, well, I guess I just have to go back to work..

Lassi ja Leevi -sarjakuvat (by Bill Wattersson) osuu aina oikeaan... Tiistaina on Knowledge Managementin koe, johon pitäisi alkaa lukemaan. Asiaa ei auta se, että olen menossa viikonlopuksi Suomeen... Muuten opinnot ovat menneet ihan hyvin. CSR (vastuullinen liiketoiminta vapaasti käännettynä) välikokeesta sain arvosanaksi 10 ja Technology Management meni läpi. Arvosanat saamme vasta myöhemmin, joten en vielä tiedä miten kirkkaasti se meni läpi :)  Tenttien lisäksi meidän pitäisi kirjoittaa ehdotelma graduaiheeksi ja valita venäläinen professori ohjaajaksi. Siitä kirjoittelin vähän enemmän englanniksi, sillä meidän pitää pitää blogia aiheesta...

Whew, I passed the technology management test! I don´t know the grade yet, but the most important thing is that I don´t have to do that again. It was agony.
We had 60 minutes, 20 questions = 3 minutes per question. And the questions were not multiple-choise questions. For example we needed to vizualise Queens song "Show must go on" and draw a process map of text about palm oil processing. Whew! So, I threw my brains in to the corner, stopped thinking and started reacting. That´s what one can do with so little time. React.

Well, good news as well, I got 10 points (max.) for the CSR mid-term test. Jihaa! I´m really happy about that.

We should write a blog about our master´s thesis proposal. I think I´ll use this blog for that, because there´s not much sense to start another blog for that. So, what has happened so far? We needed to write an essay for the application about the possible future Master´s thesis topic. I decided to write about sustainable innovations, because I find sustainable development and the possible future opportunities realated to the issue very interesting. There´s example like LifeStraw, which is easy and cheap way to get drinkable water, just by drinking through the straw which filters the water.
So, at the moment I´m writing the plan with research questions, possible hypothesis, literature review, etc. I hope that I´ll get the plan ready for next week.

We´ll see :)

No school today & Monday!

Venäjän terveysviranomaisten mukaan MITIM´11 -ryhmäläisten luennot lauantailta ja maanatailta on peruttu sikainfluenssatapauksen vuoksi. Kuten varmaan edellisestä blogikirjoituksesta arvaat, peruutukset ovat minulle ainakin helpoitus :) Nyt ehtii rauhassa lukea materiaaleja, tehdä venäjän kotiläksyt, treenata presentaatioita, pestä pyykkiä ja niin edelleen. Tottakai sanonta pitää paikkansa "Minkä taakseen jättää, sen edestään löytää". Eli peruutut tunnit pidetään ennemmin tai myöhemmin..

The health-officials in Russia said that MITIM´11 -group´s lectures on Saturday and Monday are cancelled due to a swineflue case. As you probably can predict from my previous blog, I am quite happy about it :) Now I have time to read some materials, do my Russian homework, check through the presentations for next week, do the laundry and so on.. There is this saying in Finnish (excuse my direct translation) "What you leave behind, you will find in the future", meaning that we will most likely have those cancelled lectures sooner or later...

Something in English...

When I started this blog, I wrote the title in English, but so far everything else has been in Finnish.. sorry about that! So, now I´ll try writing in English as well every now and then.

Hmm, where to start? That´s always the problem. Now I have been here for little bit more than two weeks and everything seems to be so far so good :)

The bureaucracy has been amazing and slower than I thought even I kind of expected that. First, the invitations from GSOM took quite a long time, so we had to get the fast visas and pay a bit more to get here on time. Unfortunatelly some of us MITIM students didn´t get their invitations until last week, so I was one of the fastest ones anyway.

We needed all kinds of documents once we got here - HIV-test, X-rays of lungs (in case of tuberculosis), receipt for paying the visa, 8 photos, official, notarizied Russian translations of our diplomas (NOTE: I did it in Finland, but it´s not valid here! So, it is better to do in St.Petersburg). And the funniest part is that there is no way you can do these in one place or in one day..

So, an example: First we lived in Schevchenko dormitory for few nights, and then we needed to move to "Karablie" dormitory which is a bit further away from the school and is a bit more shabby than the first one. We waited in a queue for two hours to get the keys and then in the middle of the night we were finally able to move our things to Karablie.

Few days after moving, we needed to take care of rent and access key (there´s a guard downstairs, so it´s not easy to get in..). First we went to one office to get the information what to pay (by the way, it seemed that everyone had a different figure....), then to an other office to pay the amount, then to the third office where the lady looked at my papers and did something that she kindly explained to me in Russian and after that to the fourth office where they took a picture for the access key. Finally we made it to the last, fifth office, where the boss of the building took our lung X-rays (or certificates that we don´t have tuberculosis), receipt of the paid rent and then she made us sign many papers (I didn´t understand any of it, unfortunatelly). It doesn´t sound that bad, does it? Well, the worst thing was that we weren´t the only ones doing all of this, so we spent that day in queues. :D

The good part in queue is that you get to know people very well. And the younger Russian people are very nice and they help with translation. :D

Otherwise St.Petersburg has been more beautiful, clean and amazing than I expected! I like it!

La cucaracha

La cucaracha, la cucaracha...

Torakka liittyi aamulla seuraani kun menin kahvinkeittopuuhiin. Livahti lika-astioiden lomasta pimeämpään nurkaan, ei tainnut olla aamuvirkku.

Eilen kävimme tutustumassa koulumme läheisyydessä olevaan Kunstkameraan, eli Pietari Suuren antropologian ja etnografian museoon. Näytteillä oli laajalti mm. erilaisia esineitä Kiinasta, Intiasta, Mongoliasta, Pohjois-Amerikasta, Japanista ja Afrikasta. Maksoin 50 ruplan sisäänpääsyn lisäksi 100 ruplan kuvausluvan, jotta sain ottaa kuvia paikasta.

Luonnollisesti ainoa paikka, missä ei saanut ottaa edes luvalla kuvia, oli The First Scientific collections of Kunstkamera, eli ensimmäiset tieteelliset Kunstkameran kokoelmat. Tähän kokoelmaan kuului 1800 -luvulla "kerättyjä" epämuodostuneita ihmisen ja eläinten sikiöitä/vastasyntyneitä , jotka oli lasipurkeissa kaiken kansan ihmeteltävänä.

Suosittelen ko. museota, siellä oli paljon kauniita esineitä ja kosolti informaatiota eri kulttuureista. (kuvassa on japanilaisia naamioita) Eikä noita sikiöitä ihan joka päivä näe...

Museokierroksen jälkeen kävimme kauppahallissa, joka oli positiivinen yllätys - siellä oli paljon tuoreita tuotteita ja paikka oli melko siisti. Itse en ostanut sieltä mitään, mutta kaverit ostelivat edullisia hedelmiä, hilloja ja juustoja.

Edellispäivänä kävimme parin venäläisen luokkakaverin opastamana tutustumassa Pietarin keskustaan. Kävimme mm. Kristuksen ylösnousemuksen katedraalin, Verikirkon pihalla (tai "kirkko veren päällä"). Kirkko rakennettiin 1883-1907 paikalle, jossa Aleksanteri II murhattiin vuonna 1881 (kuvassa kirkontorneja).

Kirkon läheisyydessä on todella kaunis puisto, josta ostin kanelipähkinöitä. Puisto oli todella kaunis ja hyvin hoidettu, sinne täytyy mennä uudestaan kun tulee syksy ja lehdet ovat keltaisia..

Ainiin, voisin opiskelustakin jotain mainita. Eilen oli ensimmäinen luento aiheesta Accounting (laskentatoimi). Olin yksi kolmesta ulkomaalaisesta, lähes kaikki muut olivat venäläisiä (n.40-50 opiskelijaa). Verrattuna suomalaiseen luentoon, täällä huomattavasti useammat vastailivat opettajan kysymyksiin (ilman viittaamista) ja aiheista syntyi enemmän keskustelua. Olin vielä tuppisuu-suomalainen, mutta jos vaikka ensi kerralla kommentoisin omalta osaltani.

Toinen erikoinen juttu oli kansainvälisestä tilinpäätöksestä puhuminen. Suomessa ja Euroopassa pörssiyhtiöt ovat jo vuonna 2005 siirtyneet IFRS -tilinpäätösstandardiin, eli se helpottaa tilinpäätösten eli yrityksien taloudellisen tilanteen vertailua eri maiden välillä. Ennen kansainvälisten pörssiyhtiöiden piti laatia erilliset tilinpäätökset eri maihin (tai pörsseihin), jotta ulkomaalaiset sijoittajat ja muut sidosryhmät saivat oikean kuvan yrityksen tilanteesta. Tästä luonnollisesti aiheutui yrityksille lisää kustannuksia ja aikaa meni hukkaan.

Laureassa me pohdittiin miten IFRS on positiivinen asia yrityksille ja mitä kaikkea hyötyä siitä on kansainvälistyvälle yritykselle. Täällä edellispäivän luennolla pohdittiin luokassa mitä huonoja puolia on yhtenäisiin standardeihin liittymisessä ja miten se on niiin vaikea ottaa käyttöön Venäjällä (!!??). En kehdannut sanoa, että isoin este tuntuu olevan asenne, valitettavasti.

No, muuten luento tuntui ihan mielenkiintoiselta, eipä sitä pienessä päässään osannut ajatella aikaisemmin että Venäjälläkin on luonnollisesti erilaiset käytännöt kuin meillä... Eli en taida kuitenkaan ihan helpolla päästä tästä kurssista :)

Ensimmäiset päivät

Ensimmäinen kirjoitus on aina vaikea aloittaa, varsinkin kun on paljon kerrottavaa... Tarkoitus oli aloittaa blogi jo aikaisemmin keväällä, jolloin olisin voinut kertoa enemmän paperitöistä ja muista erikoisuuksista, joita täytyy tehdä ennen kuin saa opiskeluviisumin Venäjälle.

No, lyhyesti voisin summata, että maltti on valttia, lue säännöt hyvin ja konsulaatissa ei kannata ihmetellä jos joudut allekirjoittamaan lapun jossa vakuutat ettei konsulaatti ole rikkonut passiasi. Nimittäin "vanhan mallisessa" passissani oli pienenpieni halkeama yhdessä kulmassa..

Saavuimme Minnan ja Lauran kanssa sunnuntaina Pietariin mukavalla Sibelius-junalla. Jo junassa saimme esimakua venäläisten miesten kohteliaisuudesta. Ei tarvinnut kahden pienen naisen yksin nostaa painavia laukkuja ylös junan hyllylle, vaan apua tuli ennen kuin ehti edes pyytää sellaista.

Rajamuodollisuudet menivät myös hyvin. Venäjän tulliviranomaiset lähinnä hymyilivät meidän valtavan kokoisille matkatavaroille, eivätkä sen kummemmin syynänneet mitä niissä oli. No, ehkä se oli ihan arvattavissa, että matkalaukut oli täynnä vaatteita ja kenkiä...

Tähän mennessä kaikki on mennyt kohtalaisen hyvin, odotin vielä pahempaa byrokratiaa, epäsiistimpää kaupunkia, töykeämpiä ihmisiä. Meidän buddyt eli tutorit ovat olleet aivan täydellisen ihania ja kärsivällisiä. Varmaankin heidän ansiostaan byrokratia ei tunnu niin pahalle.

He myös vievät meidät paikkoihin, joita emme olisi mitenkään muuten löytäneet - kuten toimistoon, josta sai internet-yhteyden. Hieman ränsistyneen rakennuksen ulkopuolella ei ollut minkäänlaista kylttiä ja pääsy koko paikkaan oli aika erikoinen... Itse toimisto sijaitsi rakennuksen kellarissa, mutta yllätyksekseni se oli todella siisti ja asiakaspalvelijat olivat ystävällisiä vaikka emme osanneet venäjää.

Asuntola on tällä hetkellä se kuuluisa parempi asuntola, jossa edellisien vuosien MITIM-opiskelijat ovat asuneet. Kuulimme kyllä, että tänä vuonna suurin osa kansainvälisistä vaihto-opiskelijoista joutuu parin päivän sisällä muuttamaan toiseen asuntolaan... Me ilmeisesti ollaan siinä muuttavassa porukassa. Tosin kuulin myös, että se toinen asuntola on juuri remontoitu ja saamme asunnot ylimmistä kerroksista (eli 16-17 kerroksista...). Ainiin, ja siellä on merinäköala :)

Kävimme eilen kiertoajelulla Pietarissa. Tämä on kyllä mieletön kaupunki, täytyy käydä tutustumassa paremmin vielä monenmoneen paikkaan. Tänään kävimme metrolla yritysvierailulla Baltika -panimossa aika kaukana keskustasta (kuvassa perinteistä venäläistä makeaa vähäalkoholista mallasjuomaa ja naposteltavaa, jota saimme vierailun päätteeksi). Se oli ensimmäinen kerta metrossa ja taas kaikki ennakkoluuloni oli positiivisesti kumottu. Metro oli siisti, turvallinen, valoisa enkä nähnyt yhtä ainoaa rottaa... Muuten olemme kulkeneet paikallisilla pikkubusseilla koululle ja takaisin. Yksi ajo maksaa n.22 ruplaa, eli n. 50 senttiä.. Eli ei kovin paha.. Metro maksoi 20 ruplaa (toisessa kuvassa tyhjä metrovaunu sisältä kuvattuna).

Ruokakaupat on aika samanlaisia kuin missä tahansa, paitsi että ruoka on Suomeen verrattuna todella halpaa. Hyllyiltä löytyy myös paljon suomalaisia tuotteita, eli sen puolesta tuskin tulee koti-ikävä. Muuten ehkä oman kullan kainaloon voi tulla pahin ikävä..

Ajattelin ottaa täällä reissun päällä paljon kuvia, joita laitan jatkossakin tähän blogin painikkeeksi... Yritän ehkä jatkossa kirjoittaa vähän lyhyemmin mutta ytimekkäämmin :)
